Religious Education

“When teaching RE, what children see and hear from us in school needs to be respectful dialogue between people whose beliefs are different. This also allows for discussion and a space for listening. This is what well-taught RE provides, and thus influences not only the culture of the school, but families and whole communities.”

At Overseal Primary School we aim to provide a high-quality religion and worldviews curriculum, in accordance with the Derbyshire and Derby City Agreed Syllabus for RE. This aims to encourage curiosity and an interest in the beliefs, values and traditions of individuals, communities, societies and cultures. We believe that by teaching our children how different beliefs affect how people live their lives, we will foster opportunities for personal development, thus enabling them to be better equipped when exploring the big questions about life.

We aim for our teaching of Religion and worldviews to be child-centred and encourage them to be inquisitive and ask questions to broaden their understanding. By fostering a positive attitude of respect towards others, we are equipping our children towards living in a society of diverse religions and beliefs. We adopt the philosophy that children are free to make their own choices and decisions concerning religion and belief so therefore our curriculum takes the approach of informing and developing skills with which evaluation can take place.

Religion and worldviews have a key role to play in fostering respect and social cohesion, as well as playing an important part in promoting the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our children.
