Curriculum Intent, Implementation and Impact
Curriculum Intent
Education changes lives. At Overseal Primary School, our intent is to provide a safe, happy and healthy environment in which all children are encouraged to SHINE:
Self confident Learners,
High Aspirations,
Independent learners
Nurturing and Inclusive Environment,
Excel and Achieve.
Our curriculum is ambitious and designed to give all pupils, including those who are disadvantaged or with SEND, the knowledge, skills, attributes, values and cultural capital they need to succeed in life.
It has been organised and planned to ensure every child receives a mix of academic and personal development, placing equal importance on core and foundation subjects. Great experiences are offered across all learning areas to broaden children’s cultural capital and to develop tolerance and understanding. The curriculum is rich with knowledge based facts and skills that are taught progressively, thus enabling children to make cognitive links to prior knowledge resulting in transference of information from working to long term memory. We build extensively on children’s vocabulary across the breadth of the curriculum, aiding language acquisition to narrow any gaps on entry.
Through increased real-life experiences, strategically planned into the curriculum, our children will be exposed to new concepts, experiences, environments, people, ideas and artefacts. We aim to develop the whole child by providing experiences such as outdoor learning and Forest School. Children have the opportunity to go on trips to areas of interest linked to the curriculum, aspiration days to local universities and residential holidays. The school has a strong focus on the arts and holds the Silver Arts Mark. Our amazing school choir take part in community events such as singing at the Overseal Remembrance Day service and performing at the Overseal Gala as well as taking part in school performances and singing events such as Young Voices.
Emphasis is placed on developing the skills our pupils need for future learning, including resilience, growth mind set, perseverance and good physical and mental health.
As a Centre of Excellence for Inclusion, each individual is given the support and teaching to enable them to develop the skills and acquire the knowledge that will prepare them to be successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens.
Implementation
The curriculum for each year group is designed to ensure coverage and progression across all subject areas and follows the National Curriculum 2014. At Overseal, we teach subjects discretely, making as many cross curricular links as we can to facilitate learning and knowledge acquisition.
Our approach to teaching and learning supports our curriculum by ensuring that lessons build on prior learning and provide opportunities for guided and independent practice.
The role of the subject leader is pivotal in the successful implementation of our curriculum. We aim for all subject leaders to have the knowledge, expertise and practical skill to be able to lead their areas effectively. Each curriculum subject has a dedicated subject leader with clear roles and responsibilities. They are responsible for the curriculum design, delivery and impact in their own curriculum area. Subject leaders and leaders at all levels, including Governors regularly review and quality assure the subject areas to ensure that is being implemented well and coverage and breadth and balance is adequate.
Impact
The curriculum at Overseal Primary School is well planned and thought-through to enable a wide range of engagement, not only within class but in providing out of class opportunities to enable children to develop themselves as learners.
An integral aspect of the curriculum is that children are prepared for the future – during their time at Overseal, they become fantastic role models and the very best version of themselves. Their individual identity is valued and our children are kind and caring while also aspiring to be the best that they can be in whatever area they choose to pursue. We believe that every child is unique – they all have the potential to SHINE; and our broad, varied curriculum allows every child to excel now and in the future based upon their own personal strengths, interests and core values. As a result, our children will be academically and physically prepared for the next phase of their education.
