Art and Design
“Children see before they speak, make marks before they write, build before they walk. But their ability to appreciate and interpret what they observe; communicate what they think and feel; or make what they imagine and invent, is influenced by the quality of their art, craft, and design education.”
At Overseal Primary school, we believe that art is a vital part of children’s education, with a significant and valuable role in the taught curriculum and the enrichment opportunities we offer our pupils. We teach Art and Design to inspire, engage and challenge our children, aiming to equip them with the fundamental knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.
Our Art and Design curriculum will develop children’s critical abilities, as well as an understanding of their own and others’ cultural heritages through the study of a diverse range of artists, thus broadening their understanding of the cultural capital.
Our children will develop their understanding of the visual language of art with effective teaching and considered sequences of lessons and experiences to incorporate a clear progression of skills and techniques across key stages. Understanding of the visual elements of art and design (line, tone, texture, colour, pattern, shape, space, form) will be developed by providing a curriculum which will enable children to reach their full potential.
