Pupil Support
Overseal Primary School prides itself in being inclusive and we endeavour to support every child regardless of their level of need, disability or background. All pupils follow the National Curriculum at a level and a pace that is appropriate to their abilities. At times and when it is felt appropriate, modifications to the curriculum may be implemented.
How we Identify and Assess Children with Special Educational Needs
Most children and young people will have their special educational needs met in mainstream schools through good classroom practice. This is called Quality First Teaching. At Overseal Primary School, we follow a graduated support approach which is called “Assess, Plan, Do, Review”.
This means that we will:
• Assess a child’s special educational needs
• Plan the provision to meet your child’s aspirations and agreed outcomes
• Do put the provision in place to meet those outcomes
• Review the support and progress
Once a child has been identified as needing SEND the following may happen:
One Page Profiles - At Overseal Primary School, children on the SEND register and children who need support more than reasonable adjustments, have a one-page profile. The purpose of a one-page profile is to monitor and outline the best way to support the pupil. This includes information about the pupil's strengths, aspirations and outlines essential provision and resources to support the pupil to achieve and shine. The information is collated from parents, pupils, school staff and other professionals and is reviewed regularly.
IEP - Further to this, if a pupil is more than 2 years below age expectations they will have academic targets on an Individual Education Plan (IEP). On the plan, teachers will identify gaps in the learning and set SMART achievable goals for the term. These plans are assessed and reviewed termly.
Inclusion Funding - Currently, as part of the Derbyshire local offer, we can apply for inclusion funding. This is a small budget that can be allocated to a pupil who needs short term funding to support them in school. To access this funding pupils must be having interventions that surpass £6000 a year and are significantly behind their peers.
EHCP - An Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP) is a legal document. An EHCP can be applied for if the provision required exceeds what is typically available in schools. The EHC plan will identify your child’s particular needs, and set out what additional support should be put in place to meet those needs. An EHC plan can stay in place until the young person reaches the age of 25 if they remain in education. They are reviewed annually.

Our SEND provision is not purely for academic progress. We provide support for pupils’ wellbeing as a whole. We aim to provide a secure and accessible environment in which all our children can flourish and in which all contributions are considered and valued.
Compass Changing Lives - We are currently working with Compass Changing Lives to deliver a comprehensive wellbeing curriculum and interventions to our pupils. The service have supported the school by delivering assemblies, transition support, parent coffee mornings, class workshops and staff training. Parents and professionals can refer pupils into the service for specific support with mental health and wellbeing. They will assess and signpost families to the best support.
