Pathways to Achieve

At Overseal Primary School, our “pathways to achieve” provide a carefully structured lesson sequence that forms the backbone of effective teaching and learning. Each lesson follows a clearly defined structure — beginning with retrieval of prior learning, explicit teaching of new content, and opportunities for guided and independent practice — ensuring that knowledge is introduced, built upon, and deeply embedded over time. Teachers use these pathways to clarify learning objectives, model thinking processes, and explicitly demonstrate skills before gradually releasing responsibility to the learner. Throughout the lesson, formative assessment is used to check understanding, identify misconceptions, and adapt teaching responsively. Scaffolded support enables every child — including our most vulnerable children — to access the learning. Pupils develop secure understanding, confidence in their abilities, and a sense of achievement, reflecting our vision that we value everyone, we all achieve, and we all shine.
