Lesson 2 – Reasoning About 3D Shapes

Story Explorers!

 

 

Read the two extracts from stories written by Katherine Rundell.

 

These demonstrate the wonder of different story locations – a wintry landscape complete with wolves in Russia (The Wolf Wilder) and the hidden depths of the Amazon jungle (The Explorer) – you’ll know this one!

 

Story worlds are full of exciting places to go, things to do and people (or maybe magical creatures!) to see.

 

Choose one of the extracts above and answer these questions:

What are the things that make the setting exciting to explore?

 

Think about:

 • Location What kind of atmosphere does the place have?

Scary, funny, exciting? Is the setting a ‘real’ place or fantasy, or a combination of both? Or is the setting historical?

• Climate Is it a hot or cold place?

Do characters need to wear special clothes? Do they need a costume! What is the weather be like?

• Transport

How do visitors get there? Is there a special way to explore the place they’re visiting?

• Attractions

 Are there different attractions that could be visited?

• Things to do

What can they do while they’re there? Build a raft, make fire?

• Food What food can they expect to eat when they get there?

Are there places to eat? Will they be able to eat the food or is it dangerous?

 

I’ve attached a sheet for you with these questions, to guide you through the task.

History

The Ancient Benin Kingdom

  • I can describe what the people of Benin believed in.

 

Today, we’re going to learn about the Benin religion and their beliefs.

I want you to think about any other religions or civilisations which may have similar beliefs.

 

Watch the powerpoint.

 

It gives you some images and asks you to think about which of them is the odd one out. Then, you will be shown a religious artefact (object). You need to describe it and write some questions you have about it. Remember, we did this about some Ancient Greek artefacts in one of our lessons.

 

The powerpoint also gives you information about some Benin beliefs. See the pictures below:

As you read the information, think about if it is similar to any other religion or beliefs you have heard of.

 

This is your task. Think about the beliefs we’ve learned today and imagine you are a member of the Benin civilisation. What three things do you think you would want people from today to know?

Now, look at the photos of Benin gods below.   Use these along with any other information you have learned today to decorate a Benin throne. Or, you could design a mural for a wall, or a clay tile
