Within the Early Years Foundation Stage, learning concentrates on seven areas, one of which is Understanding The World. This feeds into later learning as part of the science curriculum.
In Reception, this learning is implemented through a mix of adult-led and child-initiated activities. The children experience an exciting curriculum, both indoors and outdoors. It is creative and play-based and challenges each child to achieve their individual potential. Children are encouraged to become independent and active learners.
Links to Science from the Understanding The World area of learning in Reception is initially taken from the Early Years Development Matters (40 to 60 months) and highlights the following objectives:
- Looks closely at similarities, differences, patterns and change.
- Children know about similarities and differences in relation to places, objects, materials and living things.
- They talk about the features of their own immediate environment and how environments might vary from one another.
- They make observations of animals and plants and explain why some things occur and talk about changes.
